Dr.ShawnaBiron exists to advance understanding of Colonial Trauma Healing, Cultural Wellness, and Indigenous thriving through a holistic, relational, and sociocultural lens.
Grounded in Indigenous knowledge, lived experience, clinical counselling, social science, and doctoral research, the purpose of this platform is to explore how colonization has affected wellness, identity, culture, relationships, and all one’s relations, while refusing to place the burden and predictable and intentional outcomes off colonization on Indigenous peoples, and place it more correctly on colonization itself. Therefore, it is “colonial trauma”, not “Indigenous trauma”. This website and my work are an act of colonial resistance and postcolonial perspective.

Therefore, the focus is on healing, reclamation, reconnection, self-determination, and the many ways Indigenous people can reclaim Cultural Wellness and live well within a contemporary colonial context.

Through psychoeducation
clinical counselling, writing, workshops, speaking, research translation, and media engagement, Shawna Biron aims to make complex ideas about Colonial Trauma Healing understandable, practical, and hopeful, while honouring the diversity of Indigenous peoples, cultures, communities, and healing pathways.
The work is strength-based rather than deficit-based and centres the belief that, despite historical and ongoing colonization, Indigenous healing is possible, Cultural Wellness can be reclaimed, and Indigenous people can thrive.
